“Boney keeps clutching my hand and murmuring, My God, what you’ve been through, do you think you feel up to answering a few questions? That fast, from condolences to brass tacks. I find ugly women are usually overly deferential or incredibly rude.”
Again, acid; but also another unfortunate point for Detective Boney. Do you ever find yourself sympathizing with fictional characters for the injustices committed against them by their creators? Boney deserves better. My wife points out that Flynn is better at writing male characters than female ones, which is probably true; certainly, this is Nick’s story, and Amy gets reduced from a pile of complex possibilities to a single note. But Boney’s very much a missed opportunity, a counterpoint character rendered in broad gestures.
